We’re playing choice as Santa and giving away some presents – two sets of Maori Alphabet Blocks, created by Uncle Goose and NZ designer Johnson Witehira. Use the Maori alphabet characters to learn, put the wooden blocks together like a puzzle to reveal an artwork on one side, or just stack a few of them on a mantlepiece or shelf – a very cool piece of design for your home.
Competition now closed – and the winners are…Michelle and Karangawai!
These are rad! My favourite is probably tika which means just or right but I also really love the Maori word for breath, which is ha.
The very first Maori word I learned when I came from the UK was ‘wahanui’ (big mouth)
My darling said it meant lovely lady, it took years before someone told me it’s real meaning.
So yes that would be my favourite, but I do love ‘aroha’.
Tumeke!
My favourite Maori word is Whanau, who are are always important, especially at this time of year 🙂
It’s gotta be… Ka mau te wehi!
Waitahuna ….. the name of my childhood home
Mine is Arohanui – when you say ‘love’ in English, it can feel somewhat one dimensional but Arohanui means so much more like big love, immense love, love of family – a beautiful word with so much meaning 🙂
Uma rapiti, uma rapiti, uma uma uma!
