Ross Murray ‘Traverse’ Exhibition

In August, Ross Murray has a solo exhibition opening at Te Kōputu a te Whanga a Toi in Whakatāne. The show is titled ‘Traverse’ and is a collection of New Zealand travel prints. We caught up with Ross for a brief chat.

Tell us a bit about ‘Traverse’.

Travel posters are something I’ve always loved. NZ has a really rich history of tourism artwork and I definitely took some inspiration from some of the amazing artists that were working here around the middle of last century for the work that features in the exhibition. The pieces began as a series of personal works but they eventually came to be licensed on a range of products that have proven fairly popular with both tourists and kiwis alike. For ‘Traverse’ I’ve expanded the series to include some more locations including Whakatāne which is also my hometown.

Why do you think the art of travel posters resonates with so many kiwis?

Well, we’re a nation of travelers. We (or our ancestors) came a long way to get here and I think anyone who travels so far to make a new life has to be quite idealistic. Travel posters have a real romanticism and idealism to them so visually, I think there’s something that resonates with that spirit. And generally speaking, kiwis love their birds…

Do you have a favourite place in NZ?

As a kid, I spent several summers camping at Hahei and I have very fond memories of Cathedral Cove. Closer to home, I’d probably say Ohope. My great grandfather built one of the very first baches at Ohope and I’ve spent a lot of time swimming there over the years so it’s a pretty special place for me.

TRAVERSE: A collection of travel prints by Ross Murray

The art of the travel poster has played a role in both New Zealand’s tourism industry and art history. It is simultaneously a commodity and a piece of our cultural heritage. Traverse fits into this tradition and builds on a series of pieces that have adorned a range of products from postcards to tea towels. As the collection of scenes traverses NZ from north to south, the artwork traverses contexts from the commercial to the cultural, all the while celebrating the natural beauty of Aotearoa.

‘Traverse’ opens to the public on 17th August and runs until 26th October at Te Kōputu a te Whanga a Toi. Visit whakatanemuseum.org.nz for more details.

Maegan McDowell’s limited edition photographic collection ‘Ice Flowers’ pushes the concept of her debut series which explored the life of dried flowers. ‘Ice Flowers’ is a body of work where flowers have been plunged into icy waters and delicately lock together to create temporary forms, immortally captured. Melting ice exposes welting petals, creating cracked surfaces and minute details that champion beauty in the unusual. The visual style of this series takes cues from Renaissance’s ‘Dutch Masters’ – painters who were renowned for creating art that evoked emotions with story and colour.

Megan Archer

A young artist with a distinct painting style, Megan Archer uses collage as a starting point for her oil paintings. A way to get quick ideas down, play around with composition and not have anything be fixed before she scans the collage into photoshop to further distort and abstract them. Some of her collage works aren’t destined for oil paintings and the quirkier scenes she releases as fine art prints, like this one here ‘We Drifted On By’.

Joel Kefali

Joel Kefali is better known for his work in film but it’s these abstract collage pieces he designed for The Sherwood Hotel in Queenstown that piqued our interest. We were so excited when an order for 20 of these prints at A0 size came through our website, we had to know the artist and see his other work. Sadly these were on offs for Joel but not sadly these are amazing and their exclusivity make them that much more covetable, if you go to the Sherwood look out for the psychedelic works in each room.

Bobby Neel Adams is a photographer based in New York, ‘AgeMaps’ is a series of photographs that show the same person at two points within their life. The works have a rather sinister look about them that we can’t quite put our fingers on but are also mesmerising to stare at and notice the familiarity in the faces and imagine the lives lived between the two points.

Clare Celeste Borsch

‘The Mushroom Hunters’ is a large-scale three-dimensional collage by Clare Celeste Borsch based on the poem by Neil Gaiman. It took the artist six weeks to complete and the result is an immersive forest of flora, fauna, birds, amphibians, fungi and incests all carefully placed in this stunning scene.

“The women, who did not need to run down prey, had brains that spotted landmarks and made paths between them left at the thorn bush and across the scree and look down in the bole of the half-fallen tree, because sometimes there are mushrooms. Gavin Hurley

Gavin Hurley is an Auckland based artist and one half of the Ponsonby institution Flotsam and Jetsam. When he isn’t dressing the always immaculate store front he can be found making original paintings and collage artworks. Rakai Karaitiana Limited Edition Screen Prints

Rakai Karaitiana was born and raised in Hastings, Hawke’s Bay and spent entire summers roaming the sand dunes and beaches of his hau kainga, Waimarama. As children, Rakai’s father taught him and his siblings how to surf and as young teenagers would load the family ford falcon station wagon and do road trips up the east coast visiting whanau and exploring isolated surf breaks. Visiting these coastal communities Rakai was exposed to the painted Ringatu Marae of the east coast, these images and the love of the ocean and coastline is a big part of what inspires Rakai’s work.
