]]>Rufus Marigold Opening Night
Thursday 28th February, 6:30-8:30pm
The Tuesday Club, 42 Airedale St, Auckland Central.

1. Tell us a bit about this ‘Rufus Marigold’ fellow.
Rufus is a chimpanzee who suffers from extreme social anxiety. He’s a budding artist but spends his days working in an office. As life becomes increasingly more of a struggle, Rufus yearns to be defined as something other than a complete nervous wreck. The character is loosely based on myself at a certain stage of my life. Making comics can be a really cost-effective mode of therapy!
2. It sounds surreal and quite heavy?
It is indeed a bit surreal but I promise you it’s actually a comedy! Albeit quite a dark one… One of the vital parts of coming to terms with my own anxiety was learning to laugh at myself and ‘Rufus Marigold’ is definitely me doing that.
3. What kind of work can we expect to see at the exhibition?
It will be quite a mix. There will be some limited edition screen prints, acrylic paintings on canvas, some pencil drawings and watercolour studies. Plus a bunch of one-off giclée prints, some of them large panels from the comic, others ‘deleted scenes’ which mostly involve Rufus coming to some grisly demise. I love Rufus but he’s also my anxiety personified so I also quite enjoy torturing him. In the nicest possible way.
4. Do you usually work in such a diverse range of mediums?
No – most of my work is created using digital tools but I wanted to mix it up a bit for this one. The whole aesthetic of screen printing has been a big influence on my art style so it’s been fun creating those. Drawing with pencil is something I used to do a lot of but nowadays don’t often get time to. In the book, Rufus paints with watercolours – I can’t claim to have any watercolour painting skills so I had to channel my inner monkey for those ones.
5. Finally, why all the horses and flowers?
Rufus is obsessed with drawing horses and flowers. So you’d be forgiven for thinking the show was a collection of Rufus’ artwork. However, I can completely assure you the work is all mine. If a nervous-looking chimpanzee tries to tell you otherwise, don’t believe him.

]]>Arna Miller & Ravi Zupa
Husband & wife duo Arna Miller & Ravi Zupa have ignited (pun intended) our love for the furry feline. These hilarious matchbox woodblock prints depicting drunk cats in all kinds of all too familiar scenarios are a HOOT, from the size to the simple colour palette everything about them is perfect. Also, watch the quick video below of how they make the tiny prints and be even more impressed.

Elisa Webler
Elisa Werbler is a designer and maker based in New York City but it’s her serigraph gemstone series that caught our eye recently. Each print is made using 5 layers of transparent color, the overlapping of each layer results in the appearance of 10 or more colors. So clever how the use of shapes overlapping one another to create the look of a sparkling gemstone.

Ellen Von Wiegand
Ellen Von Wiegand is an artist based in South East London. It’s under her instagram handle @ellenvonwiegand that we found her mesmerising videos of her linocut prints. Everyone loves a good reveal and Ellen does them like a pro, cropping in and showing small details of work intrigue the viewer just enough to keep you guessing until finally she unveils the work. You gain a huge appreciation for the finished result by being invited in to view the part of the making process, we could watch Ellen work all day.

Michelle Maguire
Michelle Maguire is a prop and set stylist in Columbus, Ohio, but it’s her collaborative book ‘Salami Dreaming’ that caught our attention. It features eye-popping, hand-printed images of her blunt, funny, completely unimpressed Italian American Great-Aunt Doll, with colorful Aunt Doll anecdotes by Aaron Beck, Michelle’s husband. Aunt Doll, is who we all hope to be at 85. Michelle has managed to create

Uriel Marín
Uriel Marin hails from the east coast of Mexico and has trained extensively in fine art and the skills of print-making, etching and engraving. Our first introduction to Uriel was through the piece ‘Chapoteando’ which was bought in for framing by one of our customers. We were in awe! The sheer size of the work is impressive (1290mm x 890mm) and we were even more impressed to learn it’s a hand executed woodblock print! A definite high for the team for 2019!

]]>What do you do?
I make Art
What did you have for breakfast?
Muesli and coffee
What’s currently on your walls at home?
At home nothing because we’re renovating at the moment but my studio is filled with heaps. Doze Green, Obey, London Police, Tristan Eaton, Elliot Frances Stewart, Gasp, Otis Chamberlain.
If you weren’t making art/doing what you do what would you be doing?
Working on film sets or gardening
What does a typical day look like for you?
Long. I’m up with my boy when he wakes at 6 am. Try to beat the traffic and leave home for the studio at 7.30am. Coffee, work emails, art making, lunch, water, then more work. Chats with some Ponsonby locals and my studio buddy Hannah. Then home for the second shift with my lovely daughter and son and wife. Then sleeps.
Current obsessions?
My family
Career highlight so far?
Painting the ‘Time Being’ mural inside the Cider Building. The whole process from developing the idea with the client, collaborating with photographers and friends, then getting to actually execute the largest stencil I’ve ever done (5 meters tall) was pretty fulfilling. It’s just cool when you get to work on something like this with lots of people and everything just works out and everyone gets paid.
Dream project or collab or both?
‘Time Being’ was a pretty cool project to be able to do. Would also love to collab with other artists to paint a plane.
Plans for the future?
Working, working, working. I work mostly commercially right now so being able to do some of my own art would be nice, would like to work more on ideas I have for 3D and light-based works also more outside street work. Keep healthy, happy and look after my family.
Build your dream concert, 3 acts you wanna see live. Living or dead.
Can’t pick just three. James Brown, Tribe Called Quest, Bob Marley & Prince.
